What IS This World Coming To?

And all that.

Could somebody please tell me--is there such a place as "Cheaspeake"? No. I did not say "Chesapeake."
Today, as you can see above, I received a piece of mail from a company in Nebraska, which naturally sends its mail from Virginia. It would appear, however, that the postal service in Virginia needs a spell-check. How is it that the United States Postal Service can't even spell its place-names correctly for a metered stamp?

Unless, of course, "Cheaspeake" is an acceptable alternate spelling? 'Cause I googled it just in case, and I actually came up with some stuff. Can anyone elucidate?

I live near the Chesapeake Bay. It's quite a huge bay really.

I live on the outskirts of Bal'mer. That's Baltimore to some.

Lord bless. Nice blog.

Hey! We are the US POSTAL SERVICE! Don't make fun of us or you'll be swimming in junk mail for years.

We know where you live.

Best Regards,

The Postmaster

Well, I thought it as Chesapeake, MD--but it see it's a town in both MD and VA. I have no clue why people in the postal service can't spell....

i did some heavy research (google maps) and found that there is in fact no such place in all of virginia as cheaspeake.

however, with my detective eyes and keen sense of discovery, i note that chesapeake (which is a real town. at least according to my sources at google maps) is only a misplaced letter away from cheaspeake.

and cheaspeake sounds delicious.

Why couldn't there be a cheaspeak?

Craver--well that's something, at least.

donsands--welcome! And thanks. Did I notice you commenting on Craver's blog or something?

Postmaster--Ooh. I'm really SCARED! Already swimming in junk mail. I don't think I've gotten a real letter in . . . well . . . a really long time.

Mom--we will subtly gloss over the "as" instead of "was" in your comment. ;) Heh heh.

Jasdye--thanks for doing the research. I hate research. But I like when other people do it. Yes it is just one letter away. I don't even know why I glanced at the postmark in the first place, and I'm not entirely sure how I noticed the misspelling, since I tend more and more to dyslexia these days (for some reason) AND the word is curved. But I DID notice, and it seems bizarre to me that a postmark, of all things, would spell it wrong.

You're right about Cheaspeake, though. I was contemplating a pun along those lines myself . . .

CubeRev--um, because I guess there isn't?

Top 3 reasons why the stamp is wrong.
1. The postal service ran out of money for placement of vowels.
2. Blame the Bush Admin.
3. Vana White wasn't available to help.

Check for cameras. You might be on one of those secret shows that scans the world for people who can't catch spelling mistakes.

Kristin--that's awesome. Particularly point 3.

LL--but who watches these shows, if they're secret? And doesn't that defeat the purpose of a "show"?

I should always check my replies before sending, I guess--especially when suffering from jetlag. Or I should know better not to respond when suffering from jetlag!
